So where do we start when looking for a ski property abroad? If you go to any estate agent the first thing they will ask is what budget you have in mind. We tried to find something that we thought had some value in it as were already aware that prices had been rising rapidly over the last few years.
So where do we start when looking for a ski property abroad? If you go to any estate agent the first thing they will ask is what budget you have in mind. We tried to find something that we thought had some value in it as we were already aware that prices had been rising rapidly over the last few years.
The other question was where to look. Well the things that were important to us were
• travelling time to get to the property – we want to be able to go for short breaks and not spend too long travelling
• location to the slopes – preferably ski-in ski-out
• style of property – we want a Savoyard style property
• Price – the above can be expensive!
So we started to do some research mainly on the internet. See here for the main sites we looked at.
We started by deciding that although you can get much better value for money in either Canada or USA we thought that we would not be able to make full use of the property because we could only go for a full holiday rather than a short break.
This left us with Europe. The main thing was which airports were the most accessible and Geneva stood out from the rest. We live near Gatwick and Easyjet and BA both fly regularly and at low cost to Geneva.
From Geneva we wanted the transfer time to be around 1 hour. This lead us to resorts like Chamonix, many of the resorts in the Portes Du Soleil, Villars amongst others.
Having skied in chamonix and knowing of the prices there we decided that we would take a trip to the Portes Du Soleil and investigate further.
